Vibratory Finishing

Vibratory Finishing is a frequency and amplitude process used to deburr, radius, descale, burnish, clean and brighten a large number of relatively small parts in a short amount of time. This process is typically used to enhance the substrate surface prior to plating or other metal finishing process. Popular, affordable and advantageous for a vast amount of applications, it is quite likely most small metal parts encountered in our daily lives have undergone vibratory finishing.

In this batch operation, specially shaped pellets of media and the parts are placed into the tub of the tumbler. Common media used are ceramic, plastic or steel.

The tumbling media provides some support to the parts while keeping them separated. The vibratory action causes the media to rub against the parts,  yielding the desired result of a refined finish. Depending on the application this can be either a dry or wet process. This process can finish internal features, such as holes.

The vibratory finishing process tends to produce a smooth finish because the media essentially washes the parts. Fragile parts are very safe during the process. The load moves as a unit, with no unequal forces to stress, bend or distort parts. This can make it an ideal process for softer metals. The speed of the cutting action increases with larger parts and media.

Faster and quieter than rotary tumbling, vibratory finishing is accomplished in an open tub, allowing the operator to monitor the moment when the required finish is achieved.
